ICC ODI World Cup 2023 will be the 13th edition of the tournament. The ODI WorldCup 2023 umpires and match referee list have come through. There are a total of 16 umpires named for the tournament.
The ODI worldcup will take place in India from 5th of October. The first match will be between England New Zealand who are the finalist of 2019 edition of the worldcup.
With the tournament being played in India, the ODI World Cup 2023 will be a spectacle. From the fan following to the craze in the audience, ODI World Cup 2023 will bring great matches.
In order to make the gameplay smoother, ICC has released the list of umpires and match referees for the tournament. There arent too many new faces but the familiar ones are used in international cricket.

- Kumar Dharmasena (Cricket Umpire)
Kumar Dharmasena is one of the finest umpires when we talk about cricket. An ICC Elite panel umpire, Kumar Dharmasena has been the umpire in the finals of the 2019 World Cup.
Dharmasena is the first name for ODI WorldCup 2023 umpires and referee list. Dharmasena started his umpiring career in 2009 when he became the youngest umpire for an international match from Sri Lanka.
- Marais Erasmus (Cricket Umpire)
Similar to Kumar Dharmasena, Marais Erasmus is also the legend of umpiring. Coming from South Africa, Erasmus is also the elite panel umpire for the World Cup.
Erasmus was a winner of the Umpire of the Year award in 2021. Marais was the umpire for the 2011 ODI world cup quarterfinal between India and Australia. The first international match as an umpire came in 2006 in a T20I career.
- Chris Gaffaney ( Cricket Umpire)
A right-handed batter from New Zealand, Chris Gaffaney is a profound umpire in international cricket. Often rated highly Gaffaney has played first-class cricket for the New Zealand team.
Chris Gaffaney started his international umpiring career in 2010 when the game between Canada and Ireland in Toronto. Since then Gaffaney has umpired in more than 150 matches in all three formats.
- Michael Gough (Cricket Umpire)
Michael Gough might have been an average cricketer but there is nothing average about Michael Gough umpiring. A complete starter for ODI WorldCup 2023 umpires and match referee list, Michael played more as an allrounder in the English domestic circuit.
Gough made his international debut as an umpire in a T20I match between England and Australia. The game took place in 2013. Cut to 2023 August, Gough has umpired in 132 matches which is pretty good.
- Adrian Holdstock (Cricket Umpire)
The cricketing umpire from South Africa, Adrian Holdstock is also in the ODI World Cup 2023 umpires bag. Holdstock was a fast bowler who could bat handy in the lower order.
Adrian’s skillset was top-notch more as an umpire. It was in 2011 when Adrian Holdstock made his debut as a T20I umpire. It was in the game between South Africa and Australia.
- Richard Illingworth (Cricket Umpire)
A smiling assassin from England, Richard Illingworth knows his skills around the game. Richard played 34 international matches for the England cricket team.
Illingworth has taken 49 international wickets which isn’t bad. However, it is the umpiring of Richard Illingworth that makes him special. His debut as an umpire came in an ODI between Afghanistan and Canada. The game took place in 2010.
- Richard Kettleborough (Cricket Umpire)
Every Indian cricket fan would remember Richard Kettleborough from the semifinal of the 2019 ODI World Cup. But it is more than that to Richard Kettleborough.
An acceptable top-order left-handed batter, Richard Kettleborough started his umpiring career in 2009. It was during the match between England and Australia at Manchester. Until August 2023, Richard has umpired in more than 200 matches.
- Nitin Menon (Cricket Umpire)
A rising umpire in the international circuit, Nitin Menon is an Indian umpire who has done the job even in Ashes cricket. No doubt he is the senior umpire in international cricket.
Talking about the cricketing career, Menon is a right-handed batter who only played 2 first-class matches. However, his reach as an umpire is brilliant. In 2017 Menon made his debut in T20I between India and England. Menon has been active for more than six years now.
- Ahsan Raza (Cricket Umpire)
An interesting choice, Ahsan Raza is the only Pakistani umpire in the ODI WorldCup 2023 umpires and match referee list. But Raza deserves to be on the list. A wicketkeeper batter, Ahsan Raza has only played limited first-class matches.
Raza made his umpiring debut in ODI cricket in 2010. It was during the game between Afghanistan and Canada when Raza started his umpiring stint. He will be a key figure from Pakistan in the umpiring section.
- Paul Reiffel (Cricket Umpire)
A right-arm allrounder for Australia, Paul Reiffel was a handy batter and a quick bowler who made the right things happen. He was part of the Australian team in his prime.
Similar to his cricketing career, his umpiring career has also flourished to the ultimate level. Making his umpiring debut in a T20I match between Australia and South Africa, Paul did so in 2009. Until August 2023, Paul has umpired in 171 international matches.
- Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid (Cricket Umpire)
The fresh face on the list of ODI WorldCup 2023 umpires and match referee is Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid. Coming from Bangladesh, Sharfuddoula is one of the uprising umpires in the game.
It will be the first-ever World Cup appearance for Shahid. Being a left-arm spinner, Ibne Shahid made his debut in 2010. It was the game between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka at Mirpur.
- Rod Tucker ( Cricket Umpire)
Not a new face in the cricketing fraternity, Rod Tucker comes from New South Wales with his brilliant all-round skills. It is a pity that Rod didn’t play international matches for the Aussies team.
His charm and grace were seen more as an umpire. With the Australia vs. South Africa T20I match being the debut of Rod, he went on to umpire for quite a long time. Present at the elite panel, Rod has umpired in more than 220 matches which is an outstanding record.
- Alex Wharf (Cricket Umpire)
An emerging umpire for the elite panel, Alex Wharf puts his name up for ODI WorldCup 2023 umpires and match referee list. Alex comes from England and bowled medium fast and also scored crucial runs.
Wharf only played 19 international matches for England but immediately switched to umpiring. Wharf made the umpiring debut in 2018. It was the T20I match between the West Indies and World. Even though Wharf is an emerging umpire, he has 62 matches of umpiring experience to his name.
- Joel Wilson (Cricket Umpire)
With spooky glasses and a broad smile, Joel Wilson deserves to be on the list of ODI Worldcup 2023 umpires list. Wilson has umpired in major tournaments like T20 and ODI World Cup along with the Ashes matches.
Wilson made his umpiring debut in 2011 when West Indies was hosting India for an ODI match at Kingston. Until August 2023, Joel Wilson has 164 matches of umpiring experience under his belt.
- Chris Brown (Cricket Umpire)
Chris Brown comes from New Zealand where the ball swings a lot. Similar was his cricketing career where the medium pacer took wickets for fun. The jump from a first-class player to an international umpire was serene for Chris Brown.
Chris went on to make his umpiring debut in an ODI match. It was a game between New Zealand and Bangladesh in 2016. Since then he has become an esteemed umpire in the international arena.
- Paul Wilson (Cricket Umpire)
Not a single reader would be surprised to see Paul Wilson on the list of ODI WorldCup 2023 umpires and referee list. Wilson has been performing the umpiring duties for a long time.
A former Australian fast bowler, Wilson had 13 international wickets. But it is more the umpiring and the beard that won him fans around the world. With an umpiring career that has spanned only nine years, Paul has been a household name. He has umpired in 73 matches until September 2023.
- Jeff Crowe (Match Referee)
One of the biggest names when we talk about being the match referee, Jeff Crowe is a star in himself. A Kiwi legend, Jeff played in 114 international matches for New Zealand. He had three centuries in international cricket.
Talking about ODI Worldcup 2023 umpires and match referee, Jeff adds his name up. A talented match referee, Jeff made his debut in 2004. It was the game between the West Indies and England at Georgetown.
Until September 2023 Jeff Crowe has done the role of match referee in 597 matches which is quite the record. His role in the ODI World Cup 2023 will be crucial.
- Andy Pycroft (Match Referee)
A backfoot master, Andy Pycroft knew the trick of the trade. A former Zimbabwe cricketer, Andy Pycroft has played 23 international matches for the side. He did score three half-centuries.
What added to his achievements was being a match referee. Pycroft knew the right ways to run a cricket match and he had all the skills. Therefore he is selected for the ODI World Cup 2023.
Andy Pycroft made his referee debut in the test match between England and West Indies. The year was 2009. It has been 14 years and Pycroft is still going strong. He has done the job in 436 matches for cricket.
- Richie Richardson (Match Referee)
With a charming personality and a great smile, Richie Richardson is a superstar in himself. Coming from the shores of Antigua, Richie played the game in higher spirits. He represented the West Indies in 310 matches scoring massive runs.
21 centuries in international cricket is a testament to his talent. Even though he retired from the game quickly, Richardson didn’t leave the game. He went on to work as the match referee.
Richie’s match referee career started in 2016 when he stood in the game between UAE and Afghanistan. Cut to seven years and Richie has done the job in 206 matches which is highly complementing.
- Javagal Srinath (Match Referee)
The last of the names for WorldCup 2023 umpires and match referee is Javagal Srinath. An out-and-out fast bowler from the Indian shores, Javagal Srinath represented India in the highest form for a very long time.
His abilities and skills to swing the new ball with pace were special. Following his retirement from the international circuit, Srinath took the role of match referee.
According to ESPNCricinfo, Javagal Srinath made his match referee debut in 2006. It was a test match between Sri Lanka and South Africa. The pace bowler has done this role in 439 matches which is a massive number.
ODI Worldcup 2023 Match Schedule
India is hosting the tournament after 10 years. It will be a massive challenge for BCCI and ICC at the same time. The craze about the tournament will be on the high.
